"People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." - Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Psychiatrist
(As quoted in The Leader's Digest: Timeless Principles for Team and Organization (2003) by Jim Clemmer, p.84)
Using splashes of bold, exuberant colours and exquisite forms, Michelle Chan (MFA)'s art explores the human psychology, emotions and spirituality, making visible the beauty and hidden gems of the myriad intricate invisible psychological processes, positive psychology, different parts of the Self, and psychological constructs of the human psyche (such as love, joy, hope, and resilience). She practices Mindfulness Meditation & Felt Sense Focusing for accessing creativity and intuition, and translates her personal authentic experiences of being and presence into formal visual elements as well as music. She uses these mind-body awareness processes in her daily life for better mind clarity and emotional balance.
Grown up and educated in Hong Kong and Sydney, Chan loves to immerse herself both in the serenity and awe of Nature as well as the vibrant and energetic impulses of city life. She completed her master and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), before she studied Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
Her first solo exhibition, 'Lollipops: Focusing and Felt Sense in Abstract Painting', was held at Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC), Hong Kong. She has also exhibited in group shows in Hong Kong (e.g., Pao Galleries of Hong Kong Arts Centre) and Taipei.
It is the artist’s passionate wish to invite viewers to pause, sense and reflect, in order to experience a mental dialogue with her paintings at a personal affective as well as conceptual and aesthetic levels. She hopes that her artistic creations can serve as a media to facilitate people to better connect to their inner worlds and to bring in fresh perspectives to experience life.
